The 100% achievement route
Do the hot spring, Bomboman's drums and both Geddy achievements in Vellie before leaving. The coin and trinket achievements need a full collectible pass, and the Golden Disks need all three areas plus the Tropos door.
A 100% run of Owlboy is not hard, but it is easy to make inefficient. The achievements are spread across the whole game, two of them are tedious by design, and the collection achievements depend on a coin sweep that is much faster if you do it as you go instead of after the credits.
This route assumes a normal playthrough, not a speedrun. It puts the missable-feeling items first, the grind in the middle, and the cleanup last.
The phases
| Phase | Where | Achievements | Why now |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Vellie | Hot Spring Mastery, Music Master, Good boy, Oops..., Bad boy | All five are in the opening area and two are tedious |
| 2 | Vellie Cave | Treasure Seeker | Coins start here |
| 3 | Tropos | Flight of the Boguin | Minigame is available on arrival |
| 4 | Owl Temple | Trinket Master, first Golden Disk | 500 coins and 92 rings in one dungeon |
| 5 | Strato and the Continent | Second disk, coin banks | 600 more coins |
| 6 | Floating Tower | Third disk, Ancient Memories | Disk is in the tower |
| 7 | Post-game | Trinket Grand Master, Treasure Seeker Grand Master | Cleanup |
Phase 1: do Vellie properly
Five achievements are available before you enter the first dungeon, and doing them now avoids the evacuation dialogue later.
- Hot Spring Mastery — sit in Toby's hot spring and let the scene play.
- Music Master — jump the bongo sequence at Bomboman's house.
- Good boy — early in the story, try to report to Asio at the first sign of trouble.
- Bad boy — throw Geddy into the clouds from a platform edge. The western platform is the usual spot.
- Oops... — beat Geddy 1000 times. Corner him, throw him, hit him repeatedly. It takes a few minutes.
The last two are the only achievements that feel like a chore. Doing them before the story starts keeps them from hanging over the run.
Phase 2 and 3: coins and the cannon
Treasure Seeker unlocks as soon as you have collected a meaningful number of coins; it is not a threshold achievement in the same way as the trinket ones. Vellie Cave's 300 coins and its coupon rings are enough.
In Tropos, talk to the Boguin and rescue his two brothers. The cannon minigame unlocks immediately, and clearing it grants Flight of the Boguin. This is the only achievement that can be missed by not talking to an NPC, so do it before the temple.
Phase 4: the Owl Temple sweep
The Owl Temple is the best coin dungeon in the game: 100 coins and 14 rings in the entrance, 400 coins and 78 rings inside, plus two red chests, three blue chests and a ground item. A full pass should push you past the 2,000-coin threshold and unlock Trinket Master when you next visit the shop.
The first Golden Disk is here too. It is behind a hidden wall near purple vines at the bottom right of a screen; go through, jump the waterfall past the Wards, and it is at the top left. Miss it and you will be backtracking later.
Phase 5 and 6: the long climb
Strato holds the second disk, inside a pink-leafed tree past the thorns. The Floating Continent adds 600 coins across its two halves. Neither area has an achievement of its own, but both feed the collection totals.
The third disk is in the Floating Tower, on the right path at the spinning-platform fork. Collecting all three unlocks Ancient Memories and opens the Eternal Sanctuary in Tropos once you place them.
Phase 7: the cleanup
Two achievements remain, and both depend on the full coin sweep:
- Treasure Seeker Grand Master — every coin in the game.
- Trinket Grand Master — the Spectre Cloak, which requires every coin.
The confirmed dungeon banks total 1,400 coins. The rest is overworld chests, rings and dig spots. If you have been flying through rings and opening red chests as you go, the cleanup is short; if you skipped them, the two early dungeons are the fastest place to start.
What can go wrong
Three common problems:
- You left Vellie without the hot spring or the drums. You can return, but the dialogue changes and the scenes feel out of order.
- You missed the Owl Temple disk. The hidden wall is genuinely hidden; the disk is the one thing in the temple that is easy to walk past.
- You sold nothing, because the game has no selling. Coins are never spent, so there is no way to lose progress. The only cost of a missed coin is the walk back.
What the global percentages say
Steam's public percentages are a useful sanity check on difficulty. Flight of the Boguin sits at 8.4%, which means most players who own the game never finish the optional cannon. Ancient Memories is 7.1%, so roughly one in fourteen players collects all three disks. The trinket and coin achievements sit between 4.5% and 4.6%, which is where a full sweep lands.
The pattern is clear: the main story is finished by a large share of owners, and anything optional drops off fast. That is why this route front-loads the optional Vellie content. If you leave it for the end, the odds are you will not come back for it.
A faster route for a second save
If you are doing a second run purely for achievements, ignore the story and do this:
- Start a new save and take the hot spring, the drums and both Geddy achievements in Vellie.
- Speed through Vellie Cave for the coins, then Tropos for the cannon and the canteens.
- Clear the Owl Temple coin rooms and take the first disk.
- Push through Strato and the Continent for the second disk and the coin banks.
- Finish the tower for the third disk and Solus.
The story scenes can be fast-forwarded with F, and the removed door cutscenes make the route much shorter than it was in 2016. A focused run is closer to nine or ten hours than the completionist average, mostly because you are not re-exploring.
