Every health upgrade in Owlboy
There are four permanent health increases: Toby's hot spring in Vellie, then the Cool Canteen (free), Nice Canteen (750 coins) and Great Canteen (1250 coins) from Buccanary's shop.
Owlboy does not have a level system. Otus's health only grows through four fixed upgrades, and three of them cost coins. That makes the health path one of the few things in the game you can plan rather than discover.
The four upgrades, in the order you can reach them:
| Upgrade | Where | Requirement | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot spring | Vellie, Toby's pool | Sit in the spring | Permanent health increase |
| Cool Canteen | Buccanary's shop, Tropos | Free | Maximum health up |
| Nice Canteen | Buccanary's shop, Tropos | 750 coins collected | Maximum health up |
| Great Canteen | Buccanary's shop, Tropos | 1250 coins collected | Maximum health up |
That is the whole list. No enemy drops a heart container, no optional boss grants one, and the Golden Disks do not affect health. If you have seen a claim about a fifth upgrade, it is either a mod or a mistake.
How health actually works
The bar is a row of segments. Contact with an enemy costs a segment; falling into a pit or lava costs more; some boss attacks cost several. Health refills at save points, from fruit, and when you reload after taking damage.
The anniversary update changed one rule that matters here: fire damage no longer drains Otus's health bar over time. Before the patch, touching fire in the molten section started a damage-over-time effect that could empty a health bar while you were trying to platform. Now fire is a contact hazard, not a timer. That makes the third and fourth health upgrades less mandatory than they were in 2016, but they are still the cheapest survivability you can buy.
The hot spring
Toby's hot spring is in Vellie, and the scene is easy to walk past. Sit in the pool, let Otus struggle with the heat, and Toby teaches him to cope. The reward is a permanent health increase and the Hot Spring Mastery achievement.
Do it before you leave Vellie. After the evacuation, Toby's dialogue changes and the scene is harder to place in the story. The Vellie walkthrough lists it in the opening checklist.
The three canteens
The canteens are the only health items in the shop, and they are the first three non-cosmetic trinkets in the list. Because claiming a prize does not subtract coins, each canteen is a threshold rather than a purchase:
- Cool Canteen is free. Claim it the first time you enter the shop.
- Nice Canteen unlocks at 750 coins. The Vellie Cave bank alone is 300, and the Owl Temple is 500, so you can reach it before the temple boss if you clear the coin detours.
- Great Canteen unlocks at 1250. By then you have probably cleared the temple and part of the Floating Continent.
The coins page lists the confirmed banks: 300 in Vellie Cave, 500 across the Owl Temple and its entrance, 600 in the Floating Continent. That is 1,400 coins from dungeons alone, comfortably past the Great Canteen threshold.
When to buy each one
| Point in the game | Health target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Before Vellie Cave | Hot spring | Free, and the cave's Wards hit hard |
| Before the Owl Temple boss | Cool Canteen, ideally Nice | The Guardian chase and Turret punish a short bar |
| Before the molten section | Great Canteen | Lava is a one-hit kill regardless, but the waves are not |
| Before Solus | All four | The final fight is long, not bursty |
If you are speedrunning, the canteens are optional; the Speed-runner Mode page explains why runners avoid shop detours. If you are playing normally, there is no reason to skip them.
What the upgrades do not fix
Health does not protect you from pits, lava, or being crushed. The molten section's lava is a one-hit kill no matter how many canteens you have, and the Floating Tower's gravity platforming is about position, not durability. Treat the canteens as a buffer for combat mistakes, not as a licence to fly into hazards.
Damage by source
Knowing what actually hurts helps more than a bigger bar. The main sources:
| Source | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy contact | One segment | Most common; rolling through an enemy still counts |
| Projectiles | One segment | Wards, turrets, pirate guns |
| Lava | One-hit kill | Molten section; no health upgrade saves you |
| Pits | One-hit kill | Falling out of a room |
| Fire | Contact only | After the update, no damage over time |
| Boss attacks | One to three segments | The Turret and Solus hit hardest |
The two one-hit kills are why the health upgrades feel less important in the last dungeon than in the middle of the game. The Floating Tower is platforming, not combat; the canteens matter most in the Floating Continent's molten waves and in the Solus fight.
If you feel stuck at low health
Three fixes, in order of effort:
- Claim the free canteen. If you have not visited Buccanary, the Cool Canteen costs nothing and is a permanent increase.
- Clear the coin detours in the dungeon you are in. The Owl Temple holds 400 coins and 78 rings; a single pass usually crosses the Nice Canteen threshold.
- Buy the Next canteen before the boss, not after. The shop is in Tropos, which is one teleport away from most of the early game. There is no reason to fight the Guardian chase with a short bar.
If you are still struggling, the problem is probably not health. The game's damage is avoidable: enemy attacks telegraph, bosses have patterns, and rolling has invulnerability frames during the dodge. The beginner guide covers the movement habits that keep you out of contact damage in the first place.
