Owlboy

Your first hour in Owlboy

Quick answer

Hold a direction to fly, press the interact key to grab and carry a friend, and use the roll to move faster on the ground. Geddy is your first gunner; you can finish the whole game without touching the right stick if auto-aim is on.

Owlboy opens gently and then stops explaining. The first hour teaches flight, carrying a friend, shooting and rolling, and then Vellie Cave assumes you understood all four. This guide covers that first hour in the order the game teaches it, with the three mistakes that make the cave harder than it needs to be.

One thing to know before you start: the anniversary update changed the controls. If you last played in 2016, the controls page is the short version. If you have never played, read on.

The first ten minutes

You start as Otus in Vellie, on the floating island where he lives. There is no tutorial pop-up; the game teaches by giving you a small task and letting you fail at it. The sequence is:

  1. Leave the house and talk to Asio on the roof.
  2. Meet Geddy, your first gunner.
  3. Fly to the hot spring and talk to Toby.
  4. Go down into Vellie Cave below the house.

Do not rush step 3. Toby's hot spring gives a permanent health increase the first time you sit in it, and it is easy to walk past. It is one of four health upgrades in the game; the other three are shop items covered on the health upgrades page.

Flight is the default, not a power-up

Otus flies. He does not jump between platforms in the usual platformer sense; he hovers, drifts and accelerates, and the ground exists mostly for rolling and for switches. Three habits follow:

  • Hold a direction rather than tapping it. Owlboy has momentum, and tapping produces the floaty, imprecise movement that makes the cave feel bad.
  • Use the floor to reset. Landing cancels your momentum. If you overshoot a ledge, land and take off again instead of fighting the drift.
  • Roll on the ground. Rolling is faster than walking and, after the update, holding roll gives you the Super Dash. It is also your dodge.

Gunners: Geddy first

Geddy is a small, loud friend who turns into a gun. Press the interact key near him to pick him up, then press shoot to fire. The gun has a reload bar; you cannot spam it.

The important habit is putting him down. Otus can carry a gunner or a pickup, not both. Most early puzzles are solved by putting Geddy on a switch, picking up a key or a bomb, and coming back for him. If a switch will not stay down, that is usually the game telling you to put the heavy thing on it.

Alphonse, the second gunner, arrives at the end of the Owl Temple and can push heavier switches. He is slower but his shotgun hits harder and burns certain obstacles.

The roll, and the new dash

Space rolls. A tap is a dodge; a held press is the Super Dash added in the 2026 update. The dash is not invincible, but it moves you out of attack range faster than flying does, and it is the fastest way to cross a flat room.

Use it for:

  • crossing a room before a gate closes,
  • escaping a boss's contact damage,
  • getting under a low ceiling where flight would push you into spikes.

Do not use it into an enemy. Contact still hurts.

Three mistakes that make Vellie Cave harder

Vellie Cave is the first dungeon and the first place the game stops holding your hand. The three common failures:

MistakeWhy it hurtsFix
Fighting every GawkThey respawn in some rooms and chase in packsFly past; only fight when a door needs clearing
Ignoring the coin ringsThe cave holds a large coin bank and rings are worth 3 coins eachFly through every ring; the shop prices are covered on the coins page
Leaving without the Teleporter DeviceIt is at the very end, after the last chamberDo not exit early; the device is the reward

The Teleporter Device lets you call a gunner to your side or your feet without carrying them across the room. It is the single most useful item in the first half of the game, and the Vellie walkthrough lists the route to it step by step.

What to buy first

Coins are not spent when you claim a trinket; the shop checks how many you have collected. That means early purchases are thresholds, not a budget. The first useful unlock is the Cool Canteen, which is free and raises your maximum health. After that, save toward the Nice Canteen at 750 coins rather than buying hats.

The hats are cosmetic and fall off when you take damage. Buy them after the canteens if you want them at all.

When the game opens up

After Vellie Cave you reach Tropos, the second hub, and the structure becomes clear: a hub, a dungeon, a boss, a new gunner. The walkthrough hub shows the whole order without spoiling the story, and the beginner route is the reading order if you want to follow one page at a time.

Reading the HUD

The top-left bar is health, drawn as a row of segments. Contact with an enemy costs one segment; falling into a pit or lava costs more. Health refills at save points and from fruit, and the maximum only grows through the four upgrades covered on the health upgrades page.

The gunner's reload bar sits next to the health bar when you are carrying someone. If the bar is empty, the shot will not fire; swap to the other gunner or wait. Switching is instant with Q and E, which is faster than waiting for a reload in a boss fight.

Coins are not shown as a wallet in the HUD during normal play. The counter appears in the shop, which is why players often do not realise how many they have collected until they visit Buccanary in Tropos.

Death, checkpoints and saves

Owlboy checkpoints generously. Dying returns you to the last save point with your coins and upgrades intact, and the game autosaves at room transitions in dungeons. You do not need to manage saves manually, and there is no penalty for experimenting with a room.

The one exception is a self-inflicted soft lock: carrying a gunner into a gap that is too small can leave you stuck. The fix is the dodge, which teleports the gunner away if Drop Gunner On Dodge is enabled. That toggle is covered on the accessibility page.
