Tropos and the Owl Temple
Tropos is the second hub: shop at Buccanary's, rest at the bonfire, then take the Owl Temple on the left side of the map. The temple ends with a chase sequence and the Turret fight that recruits Alphonse.
Tropos is the second hub in Owlboy, a layer of floating islands directly above Vellie. It is where the game widens: a shop, a bonfire for party banter, a minigame, a teleport link, and the entrance to the Owl Temple. It is also where the coin economy starts to matter.
The area's own documentation lists four hub locations: the Legendary Adventure Emporium, a teleporter to the middle section of the Floating Continent, one Golden Disk placement spot, and the bonfire. From Tropos you can reach Vellie, the Boguin Cannon minigame, the Eternal Sanctuary, the Owl Temple and Strato. That makes it the busiest hub in the game, and the one worth learning properly.

Arriving: shop first, temple second
The first thing to do in Tropos is visit Buccanary's Legendary Adventure Emporium. Buccanary trades trinkets for coin totals. Claiming a prize does not subtract coins, so the shop is a threshold system rather than a wallet. The free item is the Cool Canteen, which raises your maximum health.
The trinket list, with the shop's listed costs:
| Trinket | Listed cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cool Canteen | Free | Increased maximum health |
| Dorky Hat | 500 | Cosmetic hat, falls off when hit |
| Nice Canteen | 750 | Increased maximum health |
| Gallant Hat | 1000 | Cosmetic hat |
| Great Canteen | 1250 | Increased maximum health |
| Scope | 1500 | Longer blaster range for Geddy |
| Woolen Hat | 1750 | Cosmetic hat |
| Fire Drive | 2000 | More musket damage for Alphonse |
| Spectre Cloak | All coins | Faster flight, wider spin and roll |
The practical order is canteens first, then the Scope and Fire Drive, then hats. The coins page explains where the big banks are.
The bonfire
The bonfire is the game's quiet character system. Resting there between story beats gives you short conversations with your party: Geddy's view of Advent, the Owl Temple, the pirates. It is optional, it changes with progress, and it is the cheapest way to understand who these characters are before the story turns. The characters page collects what the conversations establish.
Rest at least once before the Owl Temple. The first visit is the one that sets up Geddy's expectations for Advent, which pays off in the next area.
The Boguin Cannon minigame
A Boguin in Tropos asks you to rescue two of his brothers. Once both are back, the cannon minigame unlocks: a short challenge where you are fired through a course. Clearing it unlocks the Flight of the Boguin achievement, which Steam shows at an 8.4% global unlock rate.
The minigame is optional. It is also the only achievement tied to a minigame, so completionists should do it on the first visit rather than after the story moves on. The optional content page covers the rescue locations.
Owl Temple entrance and the temple itself
The Owl Temple is on the left side of Tropos. Its entrance area is its own small zone with a real coin bank: the community documentation lists 100 Buccanary Coins, 14 Coupon Rings, two red chests and one ground item in the entrance, and 400 coins, 78 rings, two red chests, three blue chests, one ground item and one Golden Disk inside the temple.
Enemies inside include Gawks, Spikeballs, Steambombs, Torques, Barbs, Molts and Gnomes. The temple's miniboss is Dirk and Alphonse; the dungeon's final sequence is the Owl Temple Guardian.
A route that covers the content without getting lost:
- Clear the entrance zone. Take the 100 coins and the two red chests before entering the main temple.
- Learn the water-cloud puzzle. Squeezing the cloud releases water that opens doors. It is the temple's main mechanic.
- Leave the purple tentacles for later. They need Alphonse's shotgun, which you do not have yet.
- Take the Golden Disk detour. The disk is behind a hidden wall near purple vines at the bottom right of a screen; go through it, jump up the waterfall past the Wards, and the disk is at the top left.
- Finish the Guardian chase. The statue becomes the Guardian and chases you left to right. Break obstacles, kill what blocks the path, and keep moving. At the end, a waterfall stops Otus's wings; the Guardian is frozen by the water.
- Fight the Turret. Three phases; each phase ends by baiting the turret's blast into the loose rock above. Alphonse joins after the fight.
With Alphonse in the party you can break the purple tentacles and push heavier switches. The temple hands you the tool and then immediately shows you the doors it opens, which is the cleanest design in the game.
Leaving Tropos
The temple exits toward Advent, the capital, and the story's third act. Before you go, buy what you can afford and rest at the bonfire one more time. The Advent walkthrough picks up from the city gates.
The first big purchase
Tropos is where the coin economy clicks. You arrive with the cave's 300 coins plus whatever rings you flew through on the way, which is usually enough for the free Cool Canteen and a start on the Nice Canteen at 750. Claim the free item immediately: it raises your health cap and makes the temple's boss chase survivable.
Do not buy a hat first. The hats are cosmetic, they fall off when you take damage, and they cost the same as a canteen. The Scope at 1500 is the first non-health purchase worth considering, because longer blaster range makes the temple's Gawk packs less annoying.
Common stuck points
Three places stop most first runs:
- The temple entrance. The door needs the water-cloud puzzle, not a key. If a door will not open, look for a cloud to squeeze rather than a switch.
- The purple tentacles. They are unbreakable until Alphonse joins. Players who backtrack for ten minutes are usually trying to open a path the game opens for them after the boss.
- The Guardian chase. It is a chase, not a fight. You cannot kill the Guardian; you survive until the waterfall freezes it. Keep moving right, break what blocks the path, and do not stop to fight the enemies it spawns.
If you are short on coins for the Nice Canteen, the temple's 400 coins and 78 rings are the biggest single bank in the first half of the game. Clearing the temple with the coin detours is worth more than replaying the cave.
