Owlboy

Owlboy walkthrough, area by area

Quick answer

The main route runs Vellie and Vellie Cave, then Tropos and the Owl Temple, then Advent, Strato, the Floating Continent's jungle and molten halves, Mesos, and finally the Floating Tower.

Owlboy is shorter than it looks. The main route is five areas, five bosses and roughly eight hours, and the map is closer to a chain of hubs than an open world. This page is the whole route in one place: what each area is, which boss closes it, what tool you leave with, and how big the coin bank is.

Read this page first if you want the shape without the story. Read the individual area pages if you are stuck in one of them.

Two things stand out from the table. First, the coin banks are concentrated in the two early dungeons, which is why the shop's 750 and 1250 thresholds arrive early. Second, the game gives you a new gunner after each major dungeon, and the final dungeon expects all three.

Route one: the first playthrough

If you have never finished Owlboy, follow the pages in this order:

  1. Vellie and Vellie Cave — learn flight, carrying and rolling; take the hot spring and the drums.
  2. Tropos and the Owl Temple — shop, cannon minigame, temple, Guardian, Turret.
  3. Advent and the battle — the story turn; do the school and rescue conversations.
  4. Strato, the Floating Continent and the Tower — the long climb and Solus.

Do the optional content as you pass it rather than saving it for the end. The sidequest page lists what is worth the detour.

Route two: returning

If you finished the game years ago and are back for the anniversary update, skip the beginner material and read:

A replay is about six hours if you skip dialogue, and the removed door cutscenes make the opening much faster than you remember.

Route three: completion

For 100% achievements and all coins, the order changes:

PhaseWhat to do
Before leaving VellieHot spring, Bomboman's drums, both Geddy achievements
TroposBoguin cannon, claim canteens as thresholds hit
Owl TempleFirst Golden Disk; coin detours
StratoSecond Golden Disk; both placement spots
Floating TowerThird Golden Disk; Solus
Post-gameEternal Sanctuary, coin cleanup, Spectre Cloak

The achievements route explains why the Vellie items should be done first: the evacuation changes who is where, and one of the two Geddy achievements is easiest on the starting island.

How long each part takes

The area pages do not give per-area times because they vary too much by playstyle. HowLongToBeat's aggregate is the better guide, and the game length page breaks it down by platform.

If you only read one page

Read this one for the order, then the area page for wherever you are stuck. The guides index lists every page with a one-line description if you want to browse instead of follow a route.

What each area is for

Vellie is the tutorial that does not announce itself. It teaches flight, carrying, dropping and rolling in a space with no fail state, then sends you into Vellie Cave to prove you learned it. The cave is also where the game introduces the relic plot: while you are underground, the pirates steal Vellie's relic, and the reason you were sent down there turns out to be a distraction.

Tropos is the game's real hub. It has the shop, the bonfire, the minigame and the temple entrance, and it is the only place where you can convert coins into permanent upgrades. It is worth returning to between story beats, because the bonfire conversations change and the shop thresholds keep unlocking as your coin total grows.

Advent is the story turn. It has the least dungeon content and the most dialogue, and it is the only area where the game asks you to care about characters you have just met. The battle is scripted, the city is destroyed, and the survivors relocate to Vellie and Tropos. After this, the game is about the relics.

Strato and the Floating Continent are the long middle of the endgame. Strato is a connective layer of thorns and vines with a Golden Disk; the continent is a proper dungeon with two halves and two boss fights. The jungle teaches you to read enemy rhythms, the molten half teaches you to respect one-hit hazards.

Mesos and the Floating Tower are the finale. Mesos is a story area with Twig's family and a movement change; the tower is pure platforming with no enemies until Solus. The pacing works because the tower takes away the combat you have been using for eight hours and asks you to fly precisely instead.

How areas connect

The map is a chain, not a web. Vellie connects up to Tropos; Tropos connects to the Owl Temple, Strato and the Eternal Sanctuary; Strato connects to Mesos and the Floating Continent; the Floating Tower is reached through Kernelle at the end. There is no fast-travel system, but the Teleporter Device removes most of the backtracking pain by letting you call a gunner instead of fetching one.

That shape is why the area pages are written in route order rather than alphabetically. If you are lost, the question is almost always "which hub am I in", not "which room am I in".
