Owlboy controls on PC
Keyboard: arrow keys move, Z interacts, throws and cancels, X shoots and confirms, C spins, Space rolls, Q and E switch gunners, R or Right-Ctrl teleports, and F fast-forwards cutscenes.
Owlboy supports keyboard and mouse, XInput controllers and, since the 2022 patch, native PS4 controllers. The anniversary update added a set of letter-key actions that make keyboard-only play practical, which is the biggest control change since launch.
This page lists the bindings, then the details that are not obvious from the options menu.
Keyboard
| Action | Default key |
|---|---|
| Move Otus, navigate menus | Arrow keys |
| Interact, throw, cancel | Z |
| Shoot, teleport gunner, confirm | X |
| Spin attack | C |
| Roll and Super Dash | Space |
| Switch gunner | Q or E |
| Teleport gunner | Right-Ctrl or R |
| Fast-forward cutscenes | F |
| Skip cutscene | F or the pause menu option |
The ZXC layout is the anniversary update's addition. Before it, the keyboard scheme existed in an experimental alpha build but was not the shipped default. The update made it the standard.
Gamepad
| Action | Default button |
|---|---|
| Move | Left stick or d-pad |
| Aim | Right stick |
| Shoot | Face button |
| Roll and Super Dash | Face button |
| Spin attack | Face button |
| Switch gunner | Bumpers |
| Fast-forward | Right bumper (hold) |
| Skip cutscene | Left bumper, or the pause menu |
Full controller support is listed on the Steam store page, and the game recognises the pad assigned to player one. If a controller does not respond, unplug any other controllers first; the game only reads one.
Mouse
Mouse aiming still works, and it is what the speedrunning community prefers for precision. Left click fires. Auto-aim is a separate toggle: with it on, moving with the arrow keys locks the gunner onto the nearest target, and the mouse becomes optional.
If you are playing on a laptop with a trackpad, turn auto-aim on. The developer added it partly because mouse aiming was painful for players with wrist strain, and it is the difference between the game being playable and not on a trackpad.
Rebinding
The game allows one key per action and the in-game button prompts do not update to match custom bindings; they keep showing the defaults. That is a known limitation documented on PCGamingWiki, and it matters if you rebind: the prompt on screen may not be the key you actually need.
The speedrunning community recommends rebinding roll off Space to a key that can be held comfortably, because holding roll triggers Super Dash and frame-perfect rolling. Keyboard and mouse is the faster input for runs, by about 1m 40s over controller according to the public records.
Keyboard-only play
With auto-aim on, the whole game is playable with the arrow keys and ZXC. The one action that is not obvious is teleporting a gunner: X does it automatically when you press shoot without carrying anyone. That is why the scheme works without a dedicated call button.
If you want to play with one hand, this is the layout to use. The accessibility page covers the toggles that make it comfortable.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Controller not detected | Unplug other pads; the game reads player one only |
| Prompts show the wrong key | Prompts do not follow custom bindings; check the options menu |
| Mouse aim feels slow | Mouse sensitivity is in the options; auto-aim is the alternative |
| Camera drifts | Recentre with the camera control before a jump |
| Keyboard does nothing in menus | Menus use the arrow keys and confirm, not the mouse |
The beginner guide explains what each action is for, in the order the game teaches them.
Which scheme should you use
For a normal playthrough, a controller is the most comfortable option: the analogue stick gives you fine movement, the face buttons are laid out for roll, spin and shoot, and the bumpers switch gunners without moving your thumb. The game was designed around a pad, and it shows in the boss patterns.
For precision, keyboard and mouse is better. The speedrunning community is explicit about this: mouse aim is more accurate, and the keyboard allows frame-perfect rolling if you rebind roll off Space. The cost is that movement is digital, so you lose the analogue drift that makes tight platforming forgiving.
For accessibility, keyboard-only with auto-aim is the easiest to set up. No second stick, no mouse, no controller. The accessibility settings page explains which toggles to combine with it.
What changed since 2016
Three control changes are worth knowing if you are returning:
| Change | Effect |
|---|---|
| ZXC actions added | Keyboard-only play is now practical |
| Auto-aim toggle | The second stick is optional |
| Fast-forward and skips | Cutscenes can be held or skipped |
Before the update, the keyboard scheme existed but was not the default, and the game assumed two thumbsticks. That is why the original reviews complain about aiming. The anniversary build is the one to play if controls were your reason for bouncing off.
Menus and pause
The pause menu is where you change options, skip a cutscene, and return to the last checkpoint. On keyboard, the arrow keys navigate and X confirms; the mouse does not work in menus unless you unplug controllers, according to PCGamingWiki's notes. If the mouse seems dead in a menu, that is why.
The Options menu is also where the four anniversary toggles live. They can be changed mid-game, including during a boss fight, which is useful if a flash effect is bothering you.
