Buccanary Coins and trinkets
Coins come from coupon rings (3 each), chests and dig spots, and they are not spent when you claim a trinket. The shop's listed costs run 0, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750 and 2000 coins, with the Spectre Cloak requiring every coin in the game.
Buccanary Coins are Owlboy's only collectible currency. You find them in coupon rings, chests and dig spots, and you trade the total at Buccanary's shop in Tropos for trinkets that raise health, range or damage. The important rule, and the one most players get wrong, is that claiming a prize does not subtract coins. The shop checks how many you have collected; it does not spend them.
That single rule changes how you should play. You are not saving up for a purchase; you are crossing thresholds. Once you have 750 coins, the Nice Canteen is yours and your total stays at 750 for the next threshold.
Where coins come from
| Source | Yield | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coupon rings | 3 coins each | Some must be flown through as a set, in any order |
| Red chests | Larger amounts | Found in the overworld, behind walls and in optional rooms |
| Blue chests | Moderate amounts | Often appear after clearing a room of enemies |
| Dig spots | Small amounts | Pull items out of the ground with the interact key |
| Destructible scenery | Small amounts | Some obstacles hide coins |
The community documentation describes coupon rings as the backbone of the economy. A ring is worth 3 coins, the Owl Temple alone lists 78 rings, and the temple entrance lists another 14. That is 276 coins from rings in one dungeon before you count chests.
Confirmed coin banks by area
No official total exists for the whole game, and this page will not invent one. What is documented per area:
| Area | Confirmed coins | Confirmed rings |
|---|---|---|
| Vellie Cave | 300 | Not listed |
| Owl Temple entrance | 100 | 14 |
| Owl Temple | 400 | 78 |
| Floating Continent, jungle | 300 | Not listed |
| Floating Continent, molten | 300 | Not listed |
Those five banks alone total 1,400 coins, which is enough for every canteen and most of the trinket list. The rest of the world adds more through overworld chests and rings; the exact total is the kind of number only a full collectible run can produce.
The trinket thresholds
| Trinket | Listed cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cool Canteen | Free | Maximum health up |
| Dorky Hat | 500 | Cosmetic hat |
| Nice Canteen | 750 | Maximum health up |
| Gallant Hat | 1000 | Cosmetic hat |
| Great Canteen | 1250 | Maximum health up |
| Scope | 1500 | Longer blaster range |
| Woolen Hat | 1750 | Cosmetic hat |
| Fire Drive | 2000 | More musket damage |
| Spectre Cloak | All coins | Faster flight, wider spin and roll |
The three canteens are the only trinkets that affect survivability, and they are the first three non-cosmetic unlocks. The Scope and Fire Drive are damage and range upgrades, which matter more in the molten section than anywhere else. The hats are cosmetic and fall off when you take damage.
The two coin achievements
Steam lists four coin and trinket achievements, and their conditions are specific:
| Achievement | Condition |
|---|---|
| Treasure Seeker | Collected Buccanary coins |
| Treasure Seeker Grand Master | Collected all Buccanary coins |
| Trinket Master | Collected the trinkets up through the Fire Drive |
| Trinket Grand Master | Unlocked every trinket, including the Spectre Cloak |
The distinction matters. Trinket Master is a threshold achievement: reach the Fire Drive and you are done. Trinket Grand Master requires the Spectre Cloak, which requires every coin in the game. Treasure Seeker unlocks early, simply by collecting; Treasure Seeker Grand Master is the full sweep.
Making the sweep bearable
Three habits:
- Fly through every ring the first time you see it. Rings do not respawn, and backtracking for a missed ring is the worst part of a collectible run.
- Open every red chest you pass. They are the biggest single sources and they are usually behind a small puzzle rather than a long detour.
- Check the shop whenever you cross a threshold. The canteens change the difficulty of the next dungeon, and there is no reason to fight the molten section with a short health bar.
The health upgrades page lists the four permanent increases in order. The achievements page lists all 12 achievements with their conditions.
Why there is no single total
Collectible totals are the easiest number to fake and the hardest to verify. The game does not display a global coin counter outside the shop, the community wiki lists per-area banks rather than a grand total, and Steam discussions about a total disagree with each other because players count different things: some include chest coins, some count only rings, some count the coins in the shop's own display.
Rather than pick a number and hope, this page lists what each area is documented to hold and lets you add it up. The five confirmed banks total 1,400 coins. If you are chasing Spectre Cloak, that is the number to beat before you start hunting overworld chests.
What to buy first
- Cool Canteen — free, claim it the first time you enter the shop.
- Nice Canteen at 750 — the second health increase, and the point where the molten section stops being a one-hit nightmare.
- Great Canteen at 1250 — the third health increase.
- Scope at 1500 — longer blaster range; makes Gawk packs and Vent Snakes less annoying.
- Fire Drive at 2000 — more musket damage; the last useful combat trinket.
- Spectre Cloak — the completionist reward, not a story upgrade.
Everything between those thresholds is a hat. Buy them last, or not at all.
Late-game coin routing
If you are cleaning up after the story, the fastest route is the two early dungeons. Vellie Cave and the Owl Temple together hold 800 confirmed coins and 92 rings, and both are short enough to re-clear in a single sitting. The Floating Continent is worth a pass for its 600, but the molten half is slower because of the lava.
Do not restart a save to chase coins. The shop checks your total, so a partial run still counts, and the only thing a restart costs you is time.
