Owlboy

Owlboy system requirements

Quick answer

On Windows the store lists Windows 7/8/10/Vista, a dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, a DirectX 10-capable graphics card and 600 MB of storage. macOS and Linux both ask for 2 GB RAM and OpenGL 3.0+.

Owlboy's system requirements are modest, which is what you would expect from a 2D pixel platformer that shipped in 2016 and was ported to a shared FNA build in 2022. The numbers below are the official minimums from the Steam store page, not estimates.

There are no official recommended specifications on the store page. The minimums are low enough that any machine capable of running a modern browser will run the game.

Windows

ComponentMinimum
OSWindows 7 / 8 / 10 / Vista
ProcessorDual core
Memory1 GB RAM
GraphicsPixelShader 3.0 card, DirectX 10 capable
DirectXVersion 9.0c
Storage600 MB available space

The Windows requirement is the lightest of the three. A 1 GB RAM minimum is unusually low for a 2016 game, and it reflects the 2D renderer and the small asset footprint.

macOS

ComponentMinimum
OSLion 10.7.5, newer macOS strongly recommended
ProcessorDual core
Memory2 GB RAM
GraphicsOpenGL 3.0+ (2.1 with ARB extensions acceptable)
Storage600 MB available space
NotesSDL_GameController devices fully supported

The Mac requirement doubles the RAM and raises the graphics API. The store explicitly recommends a newer macOS than the minimum, which is sensible: Lion is long out of support.

Linux

ComponentMinimum
OSglibc 2.15+, 32/64-bit
ProcessorDual core
Memory2 GB RAM
GraphicsOpenGL 3.0+ (2.1 with ARB extensions acceptable)
Storage600 MB available space
NotesSDL_GameController devices fully supported

The Linux build shares the Mac's RAM and OpenGL requirements. The glibc 2.15 minimum is old enough that any current distribution clears it.

What the numbers mean in practice

Three observations:

  • Storage is trivial. 600 MB is smaller than most phone games. The entire install fits on a small SSD without thought.
  • RAM is the only real floor. 1 GB on Windows and 2 GB on Mac and Linux is low, but it assumes you are not running a browser with fifty tabs alongside the game.
  • The graphics requirement is about DirectX 10 / OpenGL 3.0, which every GPU from the last fifteen years supports. Integrated laptop graphics are fine.

The 2022 FNA port improved loading times and stability, so the practical experience on a modern machine is better than the original minimums suggest.

Steam Deck and handheld PCs

The game runs on Steam Deck, and the 2022 patch was aimed at it. The requirements are far below the Deck's hardware. If you are playing on a handheld, the anniversary update's auto-aim toggle is the setting that makes the controls comfortable.

If the game will not launch

The most common causes are old graphics drivers and a missing runtime. The 2022 patch moved the game to FNA, which is more forgiving than the old XNA build, but the xnaversion branch still exists for machines that need it.

The install folder includes a Data/Help directory with local documentation, which the 2022 patch added. If you are troubleshooting on a machine without internet, start there.

Why the requirements are so low

Owlboy is a 2D game with hand-drawn pixel art, a small number of large rooms and no 3D rendering. The entire install is 600 MB, and most of that is art and audio rather than code. A dual-core CPU and 1 GB of RAM are enough because the game is not simulating much: it loads a room, runs a handful of enemies and draws sprites.

The 2022 FNA port made the technical side more modern without raising the floor. FNA is a reimplementation of XNA that runs on SDL, which is why the same build works on Windows, Mac and Linux and why Steam Deck support arrived with the patch.

That also explains why there is no "recommended" tier on the store page. The minimum is effectively the recommendation: if you clear it, the game runs at full speed.

Troubleshooting by platform

Windows. The most common failure is a missing DirectX 9.0c runtime on a clean install. The game needs it even on Windows 11, because the requirement is about the API, not the OS. Installing the DirectX end-user runtime fixes most launch failures.

macOS. The store recommends a newer macOS than Lion, and it is right. On modern macOS the game runs through the FNA build; if you are on an older machine, the xnaversion branch may be more compatible. The Data/Help folder in the install directory has local documentation.

Linux. glibc 2.15 is ancient, so any current distribution works. The usual Linux issue is a missing SDL controller mapping rather than a graphics problem; if a pad is not detected, check that it is the only controller connected.

Steam Deck. The game is verified-compatible in practice and runs without tinkering. The anniversary update's auto-aim makes the Deck's controls more comfortable, and the 2022 patch's faster loading helps on the Deck's storage.

What to do if it still will not run

Three steps, in order:

  1. Verify the game files through Steam. A partial download is the most common cause of a black screen.
  2. Switch to the xnaversion branch in Properties, Betas. If the game launches there, the issue is with the FNA build on your hardware.
  3. Check the Data/Help folder for the local readme, which the 2022 patch added specifically for offline troubleshooting.

If none of that works, the game's Steam discussions are more useful than a generic PC troubleshooting guide, because the community has seen the same launch failures for a decade.
